What Is a Holland Code? RIASEC Explained
If you've taken a career quiz and gotten a result like "SIA" or "ECR," you've seen a Holland Code. It's a shorthand career counselors have used for decades to match people to occupations based on interests, not aptitude tests or personality labels.
The Six RIASEC Areas
The model, developed by psychologist John Holland, scores your interest in six types of work:
- Realistic (R): hands-on, mechanical, or outdoor work.
- Investigative (I): research, analysis, and problem-solving.
- Artistic (A): creative, expressive, or unstructured work.
- Social (S): teaching, helping, or caring for others.
- Enterprising (E): leading, persuading, or selling.
- Conventional (C): organizing, data, and structured processes.
Your Holland Code is simply your top three areas, ranked highest to lowest. Someone scoring highest in Investigative, then Artistic, then Social would get the code "IAS."
How It's Used
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database, the same public occupational database our career profiles are built from, tags every occupation with its own RIASEC code. A career counselor (or a career test) can then match your code against the codes of thousands of real occupations to surface ones likely to fit.
It's not a guarantee you'll like a specific job, and it says nothing about your skill at it. It's a starting point for narrowing a huge list of occupations down to ones worth researching further.
Holland Code vs. Personality Traits
A Holland Code measures interests in work, specifically. It's a narrower, more practical tool than a full personality model like the Big Five, which describes how you think, feel, and relate to people in general, at work and everywhere else.
That's why the two pair well together: your Big Five results say something about how you tend to operate, while your Holland Code says something about what kind of work environment tends to suit you.
