Both give you a short code you can share and compare. But they're built to answer different questions, and knowing which is which changes how useful each result is.
Two Different Questions
MBTI-style typing (four dichotomies, a 4-letter code) describes your cognitive style: how you take in information, make decisions, and structure your life. It's mostly about how you operate.
The Enneagram sorts you into one of 9 core types built around a central motivation and fear, not a cognitive style. It's mostly about why you operate that way.
Why People Mix Them Up
Both use a short code (a 4-letter type, or a number 1 through 9) as shorthand for a fuller written profile, which makes them feel like competing versions of the same thing. They're not.
You can be any 4-letter type and any Enneagram number. Nothing in either framework forces a pairing, even though certain combinations show up more often anecdotally.
Using Both Together
A 4-letter type can tell you that you lean toward structured planning. An Enneagram type can tell you that planning is partly driven by a need for control or a fear of unpredictability, or by something else entirely.
Neither one replaces the other. Taken together, they cover more ground than either does alone: cognitive style from one, core motivation from the other.
