Enneagram Type 8: The Protector
What Does Type 8 Mean?
Type 8s speak their mind directly and feel most comfortable in control of a situation. They protect the people they care about, even at a personal cost, and have little patience for manipulation. Underneath the toughness is usually a strong aversion to feeling vulnerable or controlled by someone else.
Careers That Tend to Fit
Their directness and drive suit leadership roles, entrepreneurship, law, or the military. They tend to take charge naturally in a crisis, even in rooms where no one asked them to.
Type 8 in Relationships
Type 8s show love through fierce loyalty and protection, and they do best with a partner who can be equally direct with them. Letting their guard down enough to show real vulnerability, not just strength, is usually what a relationship needs most from them.

Is Type 8 the same as the RHETI?
No. This comes from our own original questionnaire, informed by the general public Enneagram framework, not the RHETI or any other commercial or licensed instrument.
What is a wing?
A wing is the neighboring type that also shapes your personality, see our Enneagram Wings page for how we calculate it.
Is Type 8 scientifically validated?
It doesn't carry the same peer-reviewed evidence base as trait models like the Big Five. Treat it as a self-reflection framework rather than a clinical measurement.
Can I be Type 8 and still relate to other types?
Yes. Most people see some of themselves in several types, the idea is that one core motivation usually explains your patterns better than the others, not that the others feel completely foreign.
