How Assertive Are You? Free Test
This test scores how assertive you tend to be: how readily you speak up, lead, and state your opinions rather than holding back.
Answer each statement on a 5-point scale, from strongly disagree to strongly agree. There's no right answer, just react honestly.
This measures a communication style, not a value judgment, neither end of the scale is better or worse, they just tend to show up differently day to day.

What This Assertiveness Test Measures
You'll get one overall assertiveness score built from how much you tend to take charge, lead, and state your views versus holding back and letting others take the lead.
This is a self-report measure of your usual communication style, not a judgment of your social skill, being lower on this scale isn't a flaw any more than being higher on it is.
How It Works (10 questions, 3 minutes)
Answer 10 short statements about yourself on a 5-point scale. One question per screen, with a progress bar so you always know how far you are.
Half the statements are reverse-worded, so straight-line answering doesn't produce a misleading score.
What Your Results Include
A 0-100 score, which of three bands you land in (lower, moderate, or higher assertiveness), a plain-language explanation of what that means, and a shareable link, no account needed to save or revisit it.
Your result also links back to the other tests on this site if you want a fuller picture alongside your Big Five or Emotional Intelligence profile.
The Science Behind This Test
These 10 items come from the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP)'s representation of the NEO-PI-R, specifically facet E3 "Assertiveness" (part of Extraversion), a public-domain item bank. Read more on our Methodology page. Read the full methodology
This is the same item family that backs our Big Five test, sourced here as its own standalone facet-level scale rather than through the packaged Big Five instrument.
Because self-report scales like this one reflect how you see your own usual style, treat your result as a reflection of your communication habits, not a clinical or diagnostic assessment.
FAQ
Is this assertiveness test really free?
Yes. Every question and your full results are free, with no sign-up or email required.
What instrument is this based on?
Facet E3 "Assertiveness" from the International Personality Item Pool's representation of the NEO-PI-R, a public-domain item bank, the same family that backs our Big Five test.
Is being less assertive a problem?
No. Assertiveness is a communication style, not a measure of worth or competence. Lower scores often come with real strengths, like being easy to work with and less prone to friction.
Does this measure confidence?
Not directly. It measures how much you tend to take charge and speak up, which often overlaps with confidence but isn't the same thing, someone can be confident and still prefer not to lead.
How long does this test take?
Most people finish in about 3 minutes.
Is assertiveness scientifically validated as a trait?
Yes, assertiveness is a well-studied facet of Extraversion in Five-Factor Model research, but as with any self-report measure, treat your score as a starting point for reflection, not a clinical diagnosis.
Can my score change if I retake the test?
Yes, your answers can shift with context, role, and self-awareness, especially for scores close to a band boundary.
Do you sell or share my answers?
No. Your answers are scored entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server, so there is nothing about your responses for us to sell or share.
