Free Original Attachment Style Test

This test scores you across the 4 adult attachment styles and shows which one best describes your relationship patterns.

Answer each statement on a 5-point scale, from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Think about how you generally act in close relationships, not just one specific person.

Attachment style describes how comfortable you are with closeness and how you handle the fear of losing it, a different lens than a trait model like the Big Five or a type framework like the Enneagram.

What This Attachment Style Test Measures

You'll get a primary attachment style, secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, or fearful-avoidant, based on the adult attachment framework researchers have used since the 1980s.

Here's a quick look at all 4 styles this test scores, your full results page covers whichever one is your primary style in much more depth.

  • Secure: comfortable with closeness and comfortable alone, without much fear of abandonment.
  • Anxious-Preoccupied: craves closeness, often worries a partner cares less than they do.
  • Dismissive-Avoidant: values independence, uneasy with too much emotional closeness.
  • Fearful-Avoidant: wants closeness and fears it at the same time.

How It Works (24 questions, 8 minutes)

Answer 24 short statements about how you act in relationships, on a 5-point scale. One question per screen, with a progress bar so you always know how far you are.

The 24 statements are spread evenly across all 4 styles, 6 each, so every style gets an equal chance to surface as your primary result.

The Science Behind the Attachment Style Test

This is an original questionnaire we wrote ourselves, informed by the general public four-category adult attachment model, not a copy of any commercial or licensed instrument. Read more on our Methodology page. Read the full methodology

Adult attachment theory traces back to Bowlby's attachment theory and Ainsworth's Strange Situation studies in young children, later extended to adult romantic relationships by researchers including Bartholomew and Horowitz's 1991 four-category model.

Because of that, treat your result here as a self-reflection tool rather than a clinical diagnosis. Attachment style isn't a mental health condition, and we say so plainly rather than overstating what this test can prove.

FAQ

Is this attachment style test really free?

Yes. Every question and your full results are free, with no sign-up or email required.

Is this the same as the ECR or the Relationship Questionnaire?

No. This is our own original questionnaire inspired by the general public adult attachment framework, not a copy of the ECR, the Relationship Questionnaire, or any other published instrument.

How long does this personality test take?

Most people finish in about 8 minutes.

Is attachment style scientifically validated?

The underlying four-category framework is widely used in relationship research, though like any self-report questionnaire, this specific test is a self-reflection tool rather than a clinically validated diagnostic instrument.

Can my attachment style change if I retake the test?

Yes. Attachment style can shift over time and between relationships, especially with a securely attached partner or through self-reflection and therapy.

What's the difference between anxious and fearful-avoidant attachment?

Anxious-preoccupied attachment wants closeness and mostly trusts it's worth pursuing. Fearful-avoidant attachment wants closeness too, but expects it to come with real risk of getting hurt.

Does this test only apply to romantic relationships?

It's built around romantic relationship patterns specifically, though attachment style also shows up in friendships, family, and work relationships, covered on each style's full profile page.

Do all attachment style quizzes give the same result?

Not necessarily. Different questionnaires word their items differently, and since there's no single public-domain standard instrument, results can vary slightly between tests.

Is fearful-avoidant attachment the same as disorganized attachment?

They're related concepts from different parts of the research. Disorganized attachment specifically describes patterns observed in infants; fearful-avoidant is the adult relationship term this test measures.

Can I have a mix of attachment styles?

Yes. Most people show traces of more than one pattern. Your results page shows your full score breakdown, not just your top style.

Is this test a substitute for couples therapy?

No. It's a starting point for self-reflection and conversation, not a replacement for professional support if a relationship is genuinely struggling.

Do you sell or share my answers?

No. Your answers are scored entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server, so there is nothing about your responses for us to sell or share.
